The front and back flanges of the plate slide with the camera and work as a guide to hold the camera securely.

You can use cable release freely in this setup. 

It fits both the front and back part of the camera. 

Hold the camera as it shoots, the left hand comfortably fit in as there is reserved room for the palm to go in.
